“Did your master know it was here?”

“Of course.”

“Do you remember seeing him come this way?”

“Not since last year…”

The outline of a new theory was already forming in the Chief Inspector’s mind: Tiburce de Saint-Hilaire, on top of the barrel, firing at Gallet, going round by the gate, jumping into his victim’s room. But it was so improbable! Even supposing that the rusty lock opened easily, it would have taken three minutes to cover the distance between the two points. And, during those three minutes, Émile Gallet, with half his face gone, had neither shouted, nor fallen, had done nothing but take his knife out of his pocket to meet a possible attacker!

It rang false! It jarred as the gate must have jarred! And yet this was the only hypothesis which followed logically from the evidence of the facts.

At any rate there was a man behind the wall. That was now established fact, but there was nothing to prove that this man was Saint-Hilaire, except the story of the lost key and the fact that the unknown person was in the grounds of the estate.

On the other hand, two other people closely connected with Émile Gallet and possibly having an interest in his death were at Sancerre at that time, and they had no good alibi to prove that they had not been in Nettle Lane: they were Henri Gallet and Éléonore.

Maigret swatted a horse-fly on his cheek and saw Moers leaning out of the window.

“Chief Inspector!”

“Something new?”
